Caribbean Books

Captain Kidd and the War Against the Pirates, by Robert C. Ritchie

This book tells the story of Captain Kidd, who was originally hired to take out the pirates, and ultimately became one. It is very interesting and easy to read. I really learned a lot about pirates and what it was like in the glory days of the Caribbean.

A Salty Piece of Land, by Jimmy Buffett

This book is a novel about a man in search of a lense for a lighthouse.

A Pirate Looks At Fifty, by Jimmy Buffett

This book is Jimmy Buffett's journal of his 50th birthday trip around the Caribbean in his plane.

Adrift: 76 days lost at sea, by Steven Callahan

I picked up this book at the Philadelphia Airport on my way back from the Caribbean. It instantly drew me in and I ended up reading the entire book in just a couple of days. It is the story of a man who attempted to sail across the Atlantic and back by himself, and ended up sinking just as he started his return voyage. He then floated by himself on a life raft for 76 days until he reached the Caribbean and was finally found. His story was later recounted on Animal Planet's TV series "I Shouldn't Be Alive".

The Caribbean, by James Michener

I happend on The Caribbean, by James Michener, at my local Goodwill store. I actually bought it to use it as a decoration in our house, because the binding said "Caribbean" in a very tropical font. Eventually I read the book and found it to be very interesting. Although it is historical fiction, it is based on the history of the Caribbean, and gives you a great insight into what life may have been like for all of the island inhabitants, from the Arawaks on up to the pirates. It is a very long book, but very readable a chapter at a time.

An Embarrassment of Mangoes, by Ann Vanderhoof

An Embarrassment of Mangoes is an excellent book about a couple take two years off from life and sail from the northeastern United States all the way down the Caribbean and back. We have read this book several times and enjoyed it very much.

A Trip to the Beach by Melinda & Bob Blanchard

One of our favorite Caribbean books of all time...the captivating story of a couple from the northeastern United States who give up everything to move to the island of Anguilla, British West Indies, and open Blanchard's Restaurant. We've both read it several times and highly recommend it to anyone who loves the Caribbean. It is a great airplane read, especially if you happen to be on your way to Anguilla.
