Part 8: Bubbly Pool and Garner Bay, Jost Van Dyke

Monday, 21 February 2011 (continued)

The path to Bubbly Pool on the east end of Jost Van Dyke was difficult to find. We wandered around through the lagoons until we found the blue painted arrows guiding us in. The trail itself was quite treacherous. It went up and down steep hills, over large boulders, and down slippery slopes. Along the way there were goats grazing near the trail. There were many signs about poisonous trees. I was tempted to test them, but I figured we were quite far from a hospital, so it would be in my best interest to heed the warnings.

The ocean waves hitting the north shore of Jost Van Dyke get funneled into a small gap between the rocks and end up splashing into a shallow pool. Everyone once in a while, the wave is quite forceful, and it causes the water to have the same bubbly effect you would expect to find in a hot tub.

We took some pictures, watched a few of the waves come in, and just enjoyed the setting. I got in and video taped a couple of waves hitting me. After I got a few shots, we decided to head back. On our way, we stopped at Foxy's Taboo for a drink. We managed to get a group picture, and then walked toward the dinghy dock and boarded the boat.

For dinner, we had reservations at Sydney's Peace & Love on Garner Bay, also on Jost Van Dyke. After we anchored and got showered and changed for dinner, Kristian dinghied us over. Sydney's Peace & Love is a waterfront restaurant and honor bar. The honor bar part is not something you see every day. Basically, you make and serve your own drinks, keep track on a piece of paper, and then pay when you are done. I couldn't imagine something like this back in the states. Someone would've stolen everything and the kitchen sink in the first five minutes.

When dinner was ready, we were called over to our table, and they brought out lobster after fresh lobster, caught today in the Caribbean Sea. My taste for Grouper and Tilapia usually keeps me from trying the lobster, but this evening it would not be spared. I enjoyed every bite. After dinner we wrote on the walls, which is a common tradition at many Caribbean beach bars. Sydney's lost its roof in Hurricane Earl in 2010, so there was a fresh coat of paint on all of the walls - plenty of room to write whatever you wished.

After dinner, we dinghied back to the boat and stayed up playing games. It was another beautiful night on Jost Van Dyke.
