Part 9 - B.V.I. Sailing Trip - 18 Feb 2011 to 27 Feb 2011
Part 9: White Bay, Jost Van Dyke
Tuesday, 22 February 2011 We awoke aboard Breanker in Garner Bay, Jost Van Dyke, and got under way to our next destination, White Bay Beach. It was on the other side of the hill, and was just a short sail around the island. We sailed around Betty Brown Rock, past Great Harbour, and around Pull and Be Damn' Point, arriving in White Bay a short time later. The surf was quite rough, due to the northerly swell - a far cry from the glass-like water we experienced on our July 2010 visit. Before heading ashore to experience the famous beach bars, we ate breakfast on the boat. After breakfast we loaded up a couple of water proof bags with our stuff, and ventured ashore. Because of the high waves, the dinghy could only get within about 20 yards of the shore. Having already had a morning Presidente, and feeling somewhat adventurous, I designated myself as the "take our expensive electronics and other stuff that can't get wet to shore" guy. I watched the waves, and when the timing was right, hopped out and carried the dry bags above my head to shore. At one point, a huge wave came over me, but I held my ground. Afterwards, I was applauded for keeping the bag dry, while my entire body, including my head, was completely submerged in the wave. We started our beach bar trek at one of our favorites, One Love Bar and Grill. This bar has a very laid back vibe. It is covered with nautical bouys, markers, and floats, and every other spot is covered with signatures of past guests. We located our names from our July 2010 trip, up on the rafters where we left them, and added a February 2011 next to it. After we all had a drink, we took a group picture and just relaxed in the beach chairs. Our next stop, just a short walk down the beach, was the famous Soggy Dollar Bar where we all had a Painkiller. This bar has been featured on the Travel Channel. It is the one with the ring game and is said to be the birthplace of the original Painkiller. Even though the Painkillers were ice cold, the heat of the day was drawing Tiffany and I to the ocean. The water wasn't too bad once we got used to it, and rolling up and down in the waves was kind of fun. After our swim, we decided to head down to Ivan's Stress-Free Bar, which was on the opposite end of the beach. We walked along the trail, up over the rocky outcrop, and back down to the sand. It only took about five minutes, but it was somewhat difficult to hike in flip-flops. Tiffany brought her Drinking Man's Guide to the B.V.I. book, so she got to go behind the bar at Ivan's and make her own drink. If this bar looks familiar, it probably is, because it was featured in Kenny Chesney's "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem" video, and this is also the location of the "Old Blue Chair" that he sings about. Eventually Kristian picked us up for another great lunch and Nutty Coloda & Presidente(s) happy-hour.
