Part 6: Sailing from Trellis Bay, Beef Island to Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke

Sunday, 20 February 2011 (continued)

It was exciting to finally be aboard Breanker, sitting out on the beautiful water. We were all settled in, and the boat was on the move. On our way out of Trellis Bay, Beef Island, Kristin spotted a sea turtle swimming by. I tried to get a picture, but by the time I got the camera it was already out of sight. As we got going, we had a little rain off and on, but it soon cleared, and the heat of the sun broke through the clouds. The first island we passed was Bellamy Cay in the middle of Trellis Bay. It was just big enough to fit The Last Resort restaurant on it.

As we moved along, we could see Scrub Island, Marina Cay, and Great Camanoe islands in the distance. From there, we headed west between Little Camanoe and Beef Island, and then we passed between Tortola and Monkey Point on Guana Island. After that, we went straight west, along the northern coast of Tortola, all the way to Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke. We could see a cruise ship in the distance tendering passengers back and forth to White Bay Beach.

We anchored in the middle of Great Harbour and dinghied over to Foxy's, where we spent the evening. We signed and hung a Chicago Parrot Head Club T-Shirt in the rafters above our table. For drinks, we had the Made 'ere beer (Foxy's home brew), and a couple Presidentes. We were told that we just missed Foxy by a few minutes.

After a while, the no-see-ums launched a massive attack on our legs, so we headed for a walk down the beach. There was a small booth with a table covered in free shells, so Tiffany took one. We were going to grab a drink at Corsairs, but right as we walked up, they wouldn't let Tiffany use the restroom, so we decided to pass.

At around 7pm, Kristian came back to pick us up for dinner on the boat. Tonight we had chicken and rice. Afterwards, we played Monkey Dice at the table to the sounds of Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney. Bob Marley's "Blackman Redemption" was blasting over at Foxy's, and was echoing across the harbor. It was a beautiful, star filled night. The moon eventually rose above Jost Van Dyke, and reflected magically on the water - a perfect sight to end our first day of sailing.
