Part 12 - B.V.I. Sailing Trip - 18 Feb 2011 to 27 Feb 2011
Part 12: Norman Island and The Caves
Wednesday, 23 February 2011 (continued) When we all had our fill of the underwater world of The Indians, we headed to Norman Island and anchored in The Bight Bay. I'm not sure how it got its name, but when viewed from above on a map, it seems to resemble a profile view of a person's wide-open mouth. Good enough for me. Once we picked a spot and got settled in, we had an excellent seafood salad for lunch, and yet another "First of the Day" round of drinks. After lunch, Tom and I kayaked around the entire bay. It was the first time I had kayaked that far from shore, so it was a bit scary when we got out into the choppier water. However, the fully nude woman who stepped out of one of the sailboats we were paddling past calmed my nerves enough that I could summon the courage to paddle on. After the kayak trip, I stayed in the water and noticed a couple large fish hanging out under the boat. We were in about 30 feet of water, so there wasn't much to see, but these fish seemed very curious, and came closer and closer to me. Marianne said they are friendly fish, and she sees them all the time on her evening swims. We still had a few more hours of sunlight, so a few of us took the dinghy over to the west side of the island to snorkel The Caves. There were three caves you could swim into on the side of the island. It was amazing. The water was so clear, and there were tons of fish and strange creatures. Even the coral was different looking. After we all got out of water, got cleaned up, and dressed, we had a Happy Hour on the boat and watched yet another beautiful Caribbean sunset. Dinner was an excellent Tuna steak with fresh vegetables and a wonderful dessert. There aren't many lights on Norman Island, so the stars came out in force while we ate. It is easy to take them for granted when you are back home, but down here they remind me of just how far away we are. After dinner and dessert, we decided to check out The William Thornton, or "Willy T's," at is commonly called. Willy T's is a somewhat crazy, old barge converted into a floating bar. We made the mistake of not wearing shoes - keep that in mind if you decide to visit. After we checked out the bar and the upstairs, we decided to head over to Pirates Bight on Norman Island. We had a drink there, but most of us were getting tired from such an exhausting day in the water, so we headed back to Breanker to gaze at the brilliant constellations before calling it a night.
