About Anguilla

Anguilla is a long, narrow island located just north of St-Martin in the Leeward Islands, part of the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean. It is home to some of the Caribbean’s best beaches and clearest waters. For more information regarding the location of Anguilla, including detailed maps, visit our Where is Anguilla? page.

Our Travels to Anguilla

We visited Anguilla during our July 2008 trip to St. Maarten. Our main goal was to try to get a dinner reservation at Blanchard’s Restaurant. The problem was, the ferries returned to St-Martin well before dinner time, so we would have to find a place to stay on Anguilla and lose out on a night at our condo we were staying at on St. Maarten. It ended up, much to our delight, being well worth the loss.

The ferry to Blowing Point, Anguilla from Marigot on the French side of St-Martin only took about 20 minutes, and it was nowhere near as rough as the trip from St. Maarten to St. Barts. When we arrived on the island, we took a taxi van to Shoal Bay Villas. We were lucky enough to have Teddy the taxi driver as our own driver and had the pleasure of listening to his rare, true-life love story of how long he waited to marry his wife. Teddy was mentioned in our favorite Anguilla related book, “A Trip to the Beach”, by Mel and Bob Blanchard, so it was a nice treat to get to meet him. Read more about our travels to Anguilla…

Food and Drinks in Anguilla

We were big fans of the book, and it was our fourth wedding anniversary, so we absolutely had to get a dinner reservation at Blanchard’s Restaurant. The dinner was wonderful and the setting was in an amazing tropical garden, just steps from the beach. Mel and Bob were not at the restaurant that night, so we were unable to meet them, but we had a great time meeting the rest of the staff after dinner. Read more about food and drinks in Anguilla…

Lodging in Anguilla

Our kitchen at Shoal Bay Villas, Anguilla from our July 2008 trip to St. Maarten.

The only place we could find in Anguilla that was in our price range and would accomodate two couples for a single night was Shoal Bay Villas. It was a beautiful, small resort nestled amongst a tropical garden, directly on the beach. Read more about lodging in Anguilla…

Beaches in Anguilla

Beautiful Shoal Bay Beach in Anguilla during our July 2008 trip to St. Maarten.

The biggest perk of staying at Shoal Bay Villas in Anguilla was that we were just steps from Shoal Bay Beach. The beach was picture perfect – the sand was almost too white to look at, and the water was so clear we could see all the way out to the reef. The snorkeling was amazing. We saw a sea turtle and tons of fish. At the point, the reef starts immediately offshore, so we literally stepped into the water and started snorkeling. Read more about Anguilla’s beaches…

Transportation In Anguilla

Most of the typical modes of transportation exist in Anguilla. There is a ferry terminal, an airport, taxis, and rental cars. We took the ferries and taxis during our July 2008 visit. Read more about transportation in Anguilla…
