Family Arrives, Secret Harbour – St. Thomas 2015

Morning at Point Pleasant Resort

Monday, January 26th, 2015 – Day 28 of 36 Today was the day that Tiffany’s sister Courtney was arriving on St. Thomas to stay with us for our last week on the island. Before heading to the airport, I went up to the resort office to get some coffee for Tiffany and a snack for the girls. On my way back out to the car, I realized I had a flat tire!

Our flat tire on our rental car – boooooo!

I had never had a flat tire on a rental car before, so the only thing I thought to do was try to find someone to put some air in it. First I checked with the maintenance guys near the resort office. After a bit of asking around, the head maintenance guy said to meet him at the top. I drove up the winding, steep roads to the top of Point Pleasant Resort, where I found the man waiting for me at the other maintenance building. I can’t continue here without at least mentioning that the view at the top was awesome. I didn’t take any pictures because I was in a hurry to get the tire fixed so we could make it to the airport on time. The maintenance man pumped up the tire until the warning light went off and then added a little more air on top of that. I did not have a tire pressure guage, but I remember thinking to myself, “Did he fill it too much?” and that was the last I thought of it. From there, I headed back down to our condo, parked, the car, and took a few pictures of the resort maps.

I returned to the condo to find the girls having a little fun dancing out on the balcony. I snapped a picture of them and then it was time to head to the airport to pick up Courtney.

Off to the airport to pick up Courtney

Although not a long distance, Cyril E. King Airport was about a 30 minute drive from our condo, depending on the traffic. We all got in the car and headed there to pick up Courtney. She arrived on another beautiful, sunny day on St. Thomas, which hopefully made a great first impression for her. Once she arrived, we snapped a few pictures in the parking lot and hopped back in the car to go back to our condo. She had been traveling all day, so we let her get settled and then headed to Secret Harbour for a happy hour sunset dinner on the beach.

Secret Harbour happy hour

If you’ve never watched the sunset at Secret Harbour Beach, you are sure missing out. It is one of the most spectacular events on St. Thomas. We’ve been there for quite a few sunsets (and quite a few happy hours). The beach is actually on Nazareth Bay, but is known as Secret Harbour Beach after the resort that takes up most of the shoreline.

This time the sun was blazing, there was a guy playing the steel pan, and the beer was nice and cold. After getting a table and ordering our food at the aptly named Sunset Grille, we walked out to the beach for a few pictures. For dinner, Bailey and Kinsley had applesauce and fruit snacks. Tiffany, Courtney and I shared french fries, bacon-wrapped jalepenos (yes, they were delicious) and a couple of pizzas (also delicious).

At one point during dinner, we could see a cruise ship heading back out to sea. That in and of itself was a beautiful sight, and to top it off, the clouds were already setting up for another great sunset.

Watching the Sunset at Secret Harbour Beach

As expected, the sunset started off great. We had just finished our dinner and were waiting for our check to come when the show got started. The water here is always so calm and reflects the sunlight in such a beautiful way. The dark contrast of the sailboats moored in the harbor make for a great photo opportunity. The sunsets are even better when those fluffy popcorn shaped clouds hang around.

A Walk to the Pier

We decided to go for a walk to the pier to see if we could see any sealife or get a better view of the sunset.

Limin’ on the rocks

We finally made it to the northern end of the beach where all the rocks were. With the sunset, warm breeze, and nowhere to go and nowhere to be, this was one of the best nights we’ve had in the Caribbean. We waded out to some of the rocks and took turns getting our pictures taken.

By the time we snapped our last photos on the rocks, it was dark. We didn’t want the night to end, but that’s kind of how it always goes. We walked slowly back to the resort, got in the car and headed back to our condo.

Back at Point Pleasant

The girls were so excited to have Courtney with us! They hung out with her on the pull out couch until way after their bedtime.

We hope Courtney had a great first day on her first ever trip to the Caribbean! We also hope we didn’t wear her out too much – there’s a lot of beach to do nothing on this week! Until tomorrow…Good night St. Thomas, good night family!
