Tickles, Water Island, and Karaoke – St. Thomas 2015

Nice morning at Point Pleasant Resort

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015 – Day 23 of 36 Tiff realized today that the Point Pleasant Resort lobby had a free Keurig coffee machine where she could have a cup of coffee in seconds instead of going through the hassle here at the condo. She headed up and took a few pictures while she was there.

Waiting for the ferry at Tickle’s Dockside Pub

I took every Wednesday as a vacation day so I didn’t have to work today. We made plans earlier in the week to meet up with our friends Kristian and Marianne for lunch on Water Island. They are very busy people, but today seemed like we were going to be able to make it happen. We got our beach gear ready and headed off to Crown Bay Marina where we would wait to take a ferry over.

Parking can be a bit difficult at Crown Bay Marina. There are signs all over that say “No Water Island Parking”. That was us. We were going to Water Island. So, instead of parking miles away and getting a taxi, we just risked it all and went ahead and parked there anyway. We were technically customers of the marina, since we were stopping at the grocery store and at Tickle’s Dockside Pub along the way.

Once we made it to Tickle’s I realized we did not have much cash. It was doubtful that there would be an ATM on Water Island, so I went in search of one in the marina. The grocery store said they did not have one and did not give cash back from purchases. Tickle’s referred me to the grocery store. The grocery store told me there was one by the windmill at the cruise ship dock. By this time, I had to run, because our ferry would be leaving in about 10 minutes. Of course, when Bug saw me leaving, she wanted to go with me. Instead of breaking her heart, I let her come with me. The ATM seemed like it was a mile away. I brought a beer with me to keep cool, but ended up carrying Bug the entire way. The sun was beating down on me and I was carrying her extra 32 pounds of weight. By the time we made it back to Tickle’s, I felt like I just did an hour workout at the gym. Thankfully, it didn’t take long to get another cold beer.

The ferry from St. Thomas to Water Island

The ferry was not really a ferry, but rather a small water taxi. It was an enjoyable way to get to Water Island because we were able to go right past the end of a huge cruise ship. You never realize how big those things are until you are right up next to one in the water. On our way out, I heard a crackled voice on the radio state “Allure you are free to port”. Tiffany read that the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas was supposed to be in port today, but it was not there. When we rounded the corner in our water taxi, there she was on the horizon. The biggest cruise ship in the world. It seemed to us that it was way too late for a ship that big to be coming to port. They must’ve had some troubles along the way. It was sad that all of those people were getting their day cut short in St. Thomas. They’d probably been planning their trip for months.

Beautiful Honeymoon Beach on Water Island

It wasn’t long after we’d gotten under way that we arrived at Water Island. We had a bit of a walk from the ferry dock to our destination – Honeymoon Beach. It was hot, the beach gear was heavy, and the girls didn’t want to walk – workout #2 for the day.

Once we made it to the top of the hill, we were able to see the beautiful beach down below. The view gave us the little boost we needed to make it the rest of the way.

When we got closer, we stopped to admire the Allure passing by on its way to Crown Bay. We immediately recognized our friends’ sailboat, Breanker moored in the bay. It was a beautiful sight to see. We hadn’t seen them since our last visit to Water Island in 2013. We were excited that things were going to work out again on this visit.

Lunch with friends at Heidi’s Honeymoon Grill

We finally made it down to the beach, found a shady spot, dropped our stuff, and just a few minutes later, Tiff saw Kristian and Marianne walking towards us. We said our hellos, gave each other hugs, and spent a little time catching up.

We didn’t want to take up too much of their time, since they were busy preparing for Saturday’s charter, so we headed over to Heidi’s Honeymoon Grill and ordered some cheeseburgers for lunch. The food was great, the conversation with our friends was even better! If you ever decide to take a sailboat charter through the British Virgin Islands, definitely look into sailing with Kristian and Marianne on Breanker. Thank you to our friends Bill and Dee for introducing us to them a few years back!

In what seemed like a blink of an eye, lunch was over, and they had to get back to work. We took a few group photos, said our goodbye’s, and just like that they were zipping off in their dinghy towards St. Thomas. Someday when the girls are older and easier to care for, we will hopefully be able to go on another charter with them and bring the girls along this time.

Enjoying the rest of the day at Honeymoon Beach

It was sad to see our friends go, but we were still blessed to have a full day left on this beautiful beach. The clouds stayed away and we had a nice, hot day. The water here was very calm so the girls really enjoyed floating around as all of the day boats full of cruise ship passengers came and went. We had to catch the ferry back to St. Thomas by 6pm, so I convinced the girls to get out of the water with a couple of ice-cream bars that I bought at Heidi’s.

We then packed up our beach gear and started the walk back to the ferry dock. After being out in the sun all day, this walk was even harder than the earlier walk. Thankfully, a very nice couple passed us on a golf cart and picked us up. That made the rest of the walk way more enjoyable.

Back to Tickle’s for Happy Hour

Since the Water Island ferry’s drop off point was at Tickle’s Dockside Pub, it only made sense for us to have a happy hour dinner there when we returned. We sat outside again and enjoyed seeing the lights from the cruise ships get brighter as the sun was setting. Bug took over our camera for a while, so some of the photos are a bit more “abstract.”

Karaoke at Panga!

We left Tickle’s and, to our relief, the car did not get booted or towed as the sign said it would. We headed back to our condo and again got to listen to the “pirate song” in the car.

Back at Point Pleasant, I knew it was Wednesday karaoke night at Panga Restaurant, so I convinced Tiff and the girls to head down there for a few beers while I belted out some songs. The girls had fun hearing me sing Kiss De Girl from Little Mermaid…not so much when I sang Kid Rock. There was a local lady there who sang some of the Frozen songs. Sissy actually sang a few lines into the microphone, but they were both too shy to try to sing a full song.

On a funny note, Bug ran all the way to the other end of the restaurant, and street-smart Sissy quickly ran up to our table and ate all of Bug’s Reeses Pieces before she returned. Gotta watch that girl!

On another funny note, Austin the bartender recognized us from the Fat Turtle back in our “pre-child” days. Lord knows what we did back then for him to remember us all these years later. What happens at Fat Turtle stays at Fat Turtle!
